Cyrano's Identity by Flurryfox Cyrano's Identity by Flurryfox
The Philosophy of Fashion Design

The series of fashion designs presented in this Look Book is inspired by the many readings I have read throughout my educational career and the thoughts sparked by them. As one progresses through the designs in the order presented, one is taken through my mindset starting from four years ago, and ending with the present. This series illustrates how my thoughts have changed over time and which philosophies have stayed the same thus far. Each piece metaphorically alludes to specific plays, books, and other readings and symbolically reflects my personal opinions and thoughts or significant changes in perspective of each. Elements of each design like the cut and fit of an outfit as well as color and patterns of cloth or embellishments like beading, lace, and accessories (jewelry/shoes etc.) will all reflect my opinions or changes in opinions towards a specific topic (philosophical or otherwise life-related).

Two: Cyrano’s Identity – In Cyrano de Bergerac, Cyrano uses only one part of him, his poetic wit, to win over Roxanne. Another part of Cyrano, his low self-esteem self that only ever worries about his nose, is hidden away and masked by his poetry. To me, Cyrano’s identity was not just the hidden insecurities and lovely words, but also his personality and romanticized ideas about love. His ability to use his words to show another side of him stood out the most. Hence, I concluded that people all each have one identity, but in the presence of different people, each identity presents only certain aspects of the identity to mask other parts of the identity. This “masking” idea is reflected in the physical mask of the outfit as well as the shoulder drapery and the full ball gown that mask the shape of the respective areas. In the ball gown, additional folding and cinching in the cloth and extra petticoats further masks the true shape of the hoop skirt. In this outfit, the outfit as a whole is the identity, and the way the cloth is utilized is the masking of certain parts of the outfit.
